Professor for Environment and Sustainable Development at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and Professor of Environmental Policy and Law at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF). Sebastian Oberthür has dealt with issues of international and European environmental and climate policy since the early 1990s. He is author and editor of more than 10 books in this field.

From 2006 to 2013, he was a member of the Compliance Committee of the Kyoto Protocol to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. From 2000 to 2013, he also served as a special policy advisor on international climate policy to the German Environment Ministry. He currently is the coordinator of the Jean Monnet Network Governing the EU’s Climate and Energy Transition in Turbulent Time.
